Some shots from yesterday’s action at the bee hotel. Red mason bees are solitary bees. A single female builds her own nest and lines each 'cell' with mud and pollen. She lays a single egg in each and caps it off with mud. This continues till the tube is full. The egg will hatch, pupate in autumn and hibernate over winter. When constructing the individual cell walls she carries mud with her jaws and enters the entrance hole head first. She then comes out and reverses back into the cavity, making it easier to brush off the pollen from her underside. Finally put up a bee hotel last week and sure enough...if you build it they will come. Sacked off home schooling this afternoon and sat in the garden watching (and filming) them come and go. Kids were excited....for about 2 mins. Anyway, a nice addition to the hood. 🐝 🐝 🐝 #lockdownlife #bees #beehotel

To satisfy both home schooling and my photography, I bought some painted lady caterpillars form @insectlore and help prevent lockdown lunacy kicking in. Kids have loved watching the caterpillars grow and transform into chrysalises looking forward to seeing the butterflies emerge soon! #metamorphosis #chrysalis #paintedladybutterfly @insectloreeurope @insectloreeu
